Member of the House of Lords / Royal College of Physicians Working Group on Allergy - New report June 2010

Expert adviser to the Universities of Southampton, Surrey and Edinburgh - allergy risks in teenagers and young adults

Expert adviser to Guy's / St Thomas' Hospital, London - Paediatric Allergy Research in early life (LEAP and EAT Studies)

Food safety risk assessments which address allergy risks including bespoke food allergy training and materials for a wide range of audiences across the UK and beyond. Current projects involve:

  • James Watt College - short courses for nursery, school and college staff

  • The University of Southampton - Lecturer on MSc Allergy course 

  • The University of Surrey - Research into consumption patterns of nut / peanut  allergic consumers for the Food Standards Agency

  • Just love food - training and expert advice for start-up cake factory excluding nuts / peanuts  from production

For the Anaphylaxis  Campaign:

Food Standards Agency: continuing liaison to protect allergic consumers through improved food safety and food information - also new EU Food labelling /  information legislation

Presenting the consumer / patient viewpoint at EU level - EAACI / ILSI

Supporting families and investigating allergy-related deaths and 'near misses' (including liaison with Asthma UK, on-going research with Dr Richard Pumphrey and providing expert evidence and background information for HM Coroners)

Hazel Gowland and her training partner, Dr Lisa Ackerley of Hygiene Audit Systems continue to work with Principal Consultant Karen Martin to deliver food allergy workshops to food safety and food standards professionals  and food business trainers.  These continue to prove a phenomenal success and feedback has been very positive.

Open courses are now available through the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH).

Support resources are available including the DVD Training Pack (as below) and the Food Allergy Training Kit which provides 2-3 hours of directed workplace learning. We are developing a new pack for child care and nurseries.
